When is the best time to apply for my Costa Rica visa?
The best time to apply for your Costa Rica visa is 1-2 months before your travel date.

Do I have to send you my passport to get a Costa Rica visa? Is it safe to send a passport?
Yes. You will need to send your actual passport, not a copy of it. The Costa Rica visa is stamped on your passport and will become one of your passport pages. Visa request cannot be processed without your original passport. Because of the importance of your passport, we strongly suggest that you send your application in a secure way, using a traceable courier such as FedEx, UPS, Express Mail or Certified Mail.

  1. No Visa Required

    No visa is required for this destination for a stay of up to 90 days. Please keep in mind that while a visa is not required, you must:

    • Hold a passport valid at least six months on entry with one blank visa page
    • Hold proof of onward/return flights
    • Hold all documents required for the next destination

    It is advisable that you also carry proof of sufficient funds relative to your intended length of stay.

Visa Exemption Rules

If you are a foreign national who are normally required to have a Costa Rica tourist visa but you meet:

All of the
following conditions:

  • You either have US, EU, or Canadian visa
  • This visa either is a tourist, business or crew visa
  • This visa is for a multiple entry
  • This visa will have least three months validity at the time of your entry to Costa Rica

or,

All of the following conditions:

  • You either have US, EU, or Canadian visa
  • This visa either is a Student, Work or Refugee visa
  • This visa will have least six months validity at the time of your entry to Costa Rica

or,

All of the following conditions:

  • You either have a US, EU or Canadian Permanent Resident Card
  • Your Permanent Resident Card will have least six months validity at the time of your entry to Costa Rica


Note: The residence proof stamped on passport, parole or work cards will not exempt you from the visa requirement.
